Navigating Uncertainty in Business
Here we are, years past the initial shock of the pandemic, and while many aspects of life have returned to normal, challenges remain. We don’t always know what the next few months will bring, but one thing is certain—life and business must go on.
So, how do we continue striving to meet our objectives when circumstances seem unpredictable? The vision for how we accomplish our goals may no longer work. Should we put them on hold or look at them differently?
The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. Each organization and individual is unique, and so are their goals. Below is an approach designed to help you reflect on your circumstances and move closer to your next best step.
Begin With the End in Mind
Stephen Covey said it best in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: “Begin with the end in mind.” When we consciously decide what we want our outcomes to be, we develop a mental “blueprint.”
This vision reduces the likelihood of repeating efforts or wasting time and resources—both for yourself and your team. Whether your priorities remain unchanged or have shifted significantly and reshaped work and life, the how of accomplishing your goals requires a new blueprint.
Adapting Priorities: Create Your New Blueprint
When considering your top priority, picture where you want to be in three months. Take a moment to create a detailed picture of your envisioned end state (who, what, where, when). This helps guide your planning process for the new blueprint.
Reflective Questions:
- What is my biggest priority?
- Is this a new priority?
- Will my blueprint for achieving this outcome need to change?
- If so, what aspects might need adjustment?
Spend time pondering which parts of your path need to shift. For example:
- Were you planning an in-person negotiation?
- Did you intend to make new sales?
- Were you organizing a workshop or developing a strategic plan?
- Were you considering a career change?
Adjusting deadlines or messaging doesn’t have to negatively impact your priorities. Your vision can still come to fruition with thoughtful changes.
Breaking Down Goals Into Baby Steps
Anyone who has worked with me knows I often use the phrase “baby steps.” Breaking down tasks into manageable pieces reduces complexity and increases focus—especially during high-stress times.
Action-Oriented Questions:
- What is one step I can take tomorrow to get closer to my goal?
- What is getting in my way?
- What support do I need to accomplish this?
- Who can I communicate my new plan with?
- Who can help hold me accountable?
By thoughtfully working through these steps, you can identify which actions remain the same and which need adjustment. Tackle them one-by-one while addressing obstacles, seeking support, and sharing your plan for accountability.
Shifting Priorities Without Sacrificing Progress
Perhaps you need different people, additional skills, new messaging, or alternative engagement strategies—but there’s always a way forward. Rather than putting priorities “on hold” indefinitely, shift how you approach them for success in today’s reality.
